Spring Arts and Crafts Show in Gatlinburg Boasts Largest Group of Craftsmen in the Nation

Mar 05, 2014

The Smoky Mountains have a rich cultural history of arts and crafts. Folk art, quilting and handmade items have long been a part of these mountains, and, to celebrate these Appalachian crafting traditions and more, each spring an annual arts and crafts show is scheduled in Gatlinburg.

Held at the Gatlinburg Convention Center, this year’s Great Smoky Easter Arts and Crafts Show will run from April 16 through April 19. More than 100 artisans will be on hand to provide demonstrations and have booths set up with handcrafted gifts and products are available for purchase.

This arts and crafts show boasts an impressive range of craftsman and artists, providing textiles, pottery, weaving, quilting, photography, sculpture and wood carving. At the Convention Center, guests will be able to meet artists themselves while sampling tasty treats and browsing through one-of-a-kind finds.

Since some of these artists are third and fourth generation crafters, they enjoy showing visitors the ins and out of their art. Admission is free each year. Show hours are 10:00am – 5:00pm Monday through Thursday, and 10:00am – 6:00pm Friday through Saturday.

Vacationers who can’t make it to the Great Smoky Easter Arts and Crafts Show in Gatlinburg can still enjoy the thriving Smoky Mountain crafting culture by visiting the Smoky Mountain Arts and Crafts Community. The eight mile loop was established in 1937 and has grown since.

Now, the Smoky Mountains holds the largest group of independent artists and craftsmen in the nation.  Their shops offer a wide variety of rare handcrafted items, including candles, baskets, pottery, jewelry, photography and oil paintings. The Arts and Crafts Community holds more than that. With restaurants and unique shops, this is one of the best places to spend a day learning about the history of the mountains and the people who call them home.
